Satsuma Suzu-nishiki
Satsuma Suzu-nishiki (薩摩錫器) is a metalwork craft produced in Kagoshima, Kagoshima Prefecture, with origins traceable to the early nineteenth century. The craft was designated as a traditional craft of Kagoshima Prefecture on March 24, 1997. Satsuma tinware is distinguished from all other domestic Japanese tinware, including Osaka Naniwa Pewterwork, by its independent manufacturing method and its use of etching with lacquer and acid to create surface patterns.
History
The use of tin as a material has deep historical roots. The oldest known tinware is a water jug called the "Pilgrim's Jar," excavated from an ancient Egyptian city ruin dating to approximately 1500 BC. In Japan, several tin medicine jars brought back by Japanese envoys to Tang China are preserved in the Shosoin repository.
In Satsuma (present-day Kagoshima Prefecture), the discovery of tin mines is recorded in "Kagoshima Prefectural History Volume 2" as dating to either Meireki 1 (1655) or Manji 1 (1658). The Shimazu family's Sengan-en villa, built in Manji 1 (1658), features a vermilion gate known as the Suzumon, whose roof is covered with tin plates totaling approximately one ton. This gate originally served as the main entrance to the villa but later became an inner gate following garden expansion carried out by Shimazu Narioki, the 27th head of the Shimazu clan and 9th lord of the Satsuma domain.
In Genroku 14 (1701), Shimazu Mitsuhisa, the 19th head of the Shimazu clan and 2nd lord of the Satsuma domain, obtained formal mining permission from the Edo Shogunate. Tin was regarded as a valuable metal comparable to gold and silver and functioned as a significant financial resource for the domain. The Edo-period travel memoir Saiyuki by Tachibana Nankei records that in Satsuma's castle town there were no ceramic sake decanters, all being made of tin.
Tinware production in Satsuma is widely considered to have begun in earnest after Bunka 10 (1813), when the Taniyama mine increased its output. Tin was also used during the Shuseikan industrialization project at the end of the Edo period as a material for Japanese-made cannons and construction. The Satsuma samurai Okubo Toshimichi was a devoted user of tin teapots; a teapot associated with him, discovered more than a century after his death, was found to still contain tea leaves with undiminished flavor and aroma.
Before World War II, more than ten tinware workshops operated in Kagoshima City. In 1933, a Satsuma tinware workshop became the only Japanese craft workshop to win an award at the Chicago World's Fair. The Suzuyama (tin mountain) mine, located in the Suzuyama area of Shimofukumoto-cho, Kagoshima City, closed in 1988, after which tin is no longer mined in Kagoshima Prefecture. On November 9, 2020, craftsman Iwakiri Manabu was selected by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare as an Outstanding Skilled Worker (Gendai no Meiko) for that year. On October 31, 2022, the Satsuma Suzu Sakurajima Tumbler "Saiko" won the Kagoshima Governor's Award — the highest award — at the 2022 Kagoshima New Special Products Contest in the crafts and lifestyle products category, from a field of 35 entered items.
Techniques & Production Process
The entire production process of Satsuma tinware, from melting the metal to final polishing, is carried out entirely by hand. Tin is first melted in a gas stove or iron pot and poured into molds. The casting stage, known as ikomi, is considered the most critical point in production: the metal crystal structure formed during casting cannot be corrected afterward, and the quality of the finished piece is determined at this stage.
A distinctive technique called tobi-kanna (flying plane) is employed, in which a rough plane is held under the arm or chest and applied to the surface of the piece in an irregular shaving motion. This technique demands precision to the order of a few tens of a millimeter. Surface decoration involves a unique method of creating patterns using lacquer and acid etching. The piece is immersed in a low-concentration nitric acid solution for approximately 30 minutes to produce a nashi-ji (pear-skin) texture on the surface. Following acid immersion, the piece is neutralized by immersion in a baking soda solution.
A more recent innovation is the "Saiko" tumbler, which applies a patented technology of the Kagoshima Industrial Technology Center: a thin film extracted from Sakurajima lava is deposited on the surface using plasma sputtering. Mastery of the full craft is considered to require approximately 30 years of training. Currently, hundreds of product types are produced, ranging from traditional items such as rock glasses, cups, tea caddies, teapots, sake vessels, flower vases, and altar goods, to accessories.

The closure of the Suzuyama mine in 1988 ended local tin production, and raw tin material is now imported from Malaysia.

Craftsman Iwakiri Manabu received national acknowledgment as an Outstanding Skilled Worker in 2020, and the "Saiko" tumbler — incorporating Sakurajima lava film technology — won the top award at the 2022 Kagoshima New Special Products Contest. The breadth of product types, currently numbering in the hundreds, reflects ongoing adaptation to contemporary demand alongside the preservation of traditional forms.
