Carved from solid wood on a lathe, each KODAI plate is finished with layers of traditional Japanese lacquer and accented with gold leaf, creating a striking contrast against the deep jet-black surface.
What makes the KODAI finish distinctive is its use of dry lacquer powder between the wooden base and lacquer layers. This traditional material helps soften impact on the wood while giving the surface a sophisticated, almost earthenware-like texture — visually reminiscent of unglazed ceramics, yet warm and light in the hand like wood.
A final glass coating helps protect the surface and makes everyday care easier, bringing modern practicality to traditional Japanese lacquer craftsmanship.
