Ranshi is a lacquer pattern whose name refers to disordered threads. On this champagne saucer, the fine, irregular texture gives a familiar glass form an unmistakably different surface.
An older pattern, adapted for glass
The product description says ranshi is an older lacquer technique that has become difficult to find. Nurikobo Fujii has recreated it in the workshop's own way for this glass. The description does not give an exact date for the technique or identify an individual maker, so the visible pattern is the best place to begin.
Where is the lacquer?
The urushi is applied to the back of the glass and sealed with a special dishwasher-safe coating resin. The surface touched during use is glass. That construction lets the ranshi finish be seen without making it the drinking surface.
What can you see in the finished piece?
The saucer is offered in Pure White, Jet Black, and Jet White. The finish resembles a tangle of fine lines rather than a flat block of color. Each piece is handcrafted, so slight differences in color, grain, and finish are expected.
The glass holds 230 ml and measures approximately 91 mm across and 147 mm high. Its wide bowl suits sparkling wine and cocktails; the maker also suggests fruit desserts.
Care still matters
The product is described as dishwasher-safe while its rear coating remains intact. If that coating is scratched, the maker advises hand washing because detergent reaching the lower layer may damage the finish.
