History

Silk production in the inland Tango region has been carried out since at least the Nara period. The Shosoin repository contains ashiginu (coarse silk) submitted to the imperial court by a person named Kurumabe no Kujira from Takeno District, Tango Province, corresponding to the present-day area of Yosano Town and Kyotango City. The chirimen technique was introduced to the Mineyama and Kayatani areas of the Tango region between 1720 (Kyoho 5) and 1722 (Kyoho 7), marking the formal origin of Tango chirimen as a distinct textile type.

In 1752 (Horeki 2), Hamachirimen of Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture received its technique from Tango chirimen, illustrating the craft's regional influence. Subsequent centuries saw continuous product innovation. Wata-chirimen (cotton chirimen) was devised in 1867 (Keio 3) by chirimen merchant Kanda Zenbei of Kuchiono Village (present-day Kyotango City Omiya-cho Kuchiono). Kenbo-chirimen (spun silk chirimen) was developed in 1886 (Meiji 19) by Adachi Yuzaemon of Shimazu Village (present-day Kyotango City Amino-cho Shimazu). The 'Asahi-ori' was patent-registered in 1893 (Meiji 26) under the name of Umeda Risuke of Kaya Town (present-day Yosano Town Kaya). 'Ro-chirimen' was developed in 1905 (Meiji 38) by Hosoi Sanrosuke of Kaya-oku, Kaya Town (present-day Yosano Town Kaya-oku), and 'Nuitori chirimen' (embroidery-style chirimen) followed in 1925 (Taisho 14), developed by Kato Chuji of Mikawachi, Nodagawa Town (present-day Yosano Town Mikawachi). By 1932 (Showa 7), a pamphlet created by the Tango Chirimen Industrial Cooperative confirmed at least 95 distinct types of Tango chirimen.

Research into shrink-resistant chirimen advanced from around the Showa 30s (1955 onward). 'Kawari-muji chirimen' was developed in 1957 (Showa 32) and has been the mainstream plain chirimen product since. 'Koma-rinzu chirimen' was developed in 1962 (Showa 37) and reached its peak around 1964 (Showa 39). 'Mon-isho chirimen' became mainstream around 1968 (Showa 43) and as of 2017 again accounts for the majority of Tango chirimen production. 'Goma-shusu chirimen' (also called 'donsu chirimen') was popular around 1985 (Showa 60), the same year anti-yellowing processing (Sunny Like processing) research results were confirmed in August 1985. Since 1988 (Showa 63), computer Jacquard looms have become widespread and pattern cards have been digitized.

Tango chirimen reached its peak during the 'Gacchaman boom' of the Showa 40s (around 1965–1974), a period when more than 40% of households in the Tango region were engaged in the weaving industry and the number of weaving households (hataya) exceeded 10,000. Production subsequently declined due to the unified import system for raw silk and the Westernization of clothing, and by the early 21st century the scale of production had shrunk to approximately one-quarter of its peak level.

Techniques & Production Process

The defining characteristic of Tango chirimen is its use of strongly twisted weft threads, twisted approximately 3,000 times per meter using a 'hachichō twisting machine' (hachichō nenshiki). In the plain chirimen weft process, the yarn is first boiled in hot water (nuikidaki) to soften it before twisting. After weaving, the sericin—a colloidal substance coating the raw silk surface—is removed by scouring. This causes the twisted yarn to contract and generates a surface texture known as 'shibu,' which is the hallmark of chirimen fabric.

For mon-chirimen (patterned chirimen), additional preparatory steps precede weaving: preparing the original design (shoe), drawing the design chart (isho-zu), carving the pattern card (monshi-bori), and assembling the pattern cards (monshi-ami). Since 1988, computer Jacquard looms have become widespread and pattern cards have been digitized, streamlining the mon-chirimen production process. Tango chirimen techniques are also applied to chemical fiber materials such as rayon and polyester. Antiviral processing applied to Tango chirimen products made from polyester/cotton material has been shown to reduce the bird influenza virus H5N2 by 99.95% and to demonstrate a deodorizing effect of reducing acetic acid gas concentration by 94.3%.

The Tango region's humid climate, heavily influenced by seasonal winds called 'uranishi,' is considered a factor in the region's suitability for silk textile production, as expressed in the local saying: 'You may forget your lunch but don't forget your umbrella.'
