Kyo-yuzen
Kyo-Yuzen (京友禅) is a dyeing craft produced in Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, in which ancient dyeing techniques were perfected by fan painter Miyazaki Yuzensai. Also referred to simply as Yuzen-zome (友禅染), it is designated as a Traditional Craft Product by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. Kyo-Yuzen holds a regional collective trademark (chiiki dantai shōhyō).
History
Kyo-Yuzen takes its name and foundational techniques from fan painter Miyazaki Yuzensai, who is credited with perfecting the ancient dyeing methods that define the craft. Traditionally, finished Kyo-Yuzen fabric was bleached in the waters of the Kamogawa River, a process that contributed to the production of vivid colors. In 1903 (Meiji 36), dyer Nishimura Sōzaemon exhibited the work Velvet Yuzen Arashi-zu Kakehana at the 5th National Industrial Exposition; the original painting for this work was by Kishima Ōkoku. In more recent times, production sites of Kyo-Yuzen have moved to the suburbs of Kyoto.
Techniques & Production Process
Full hand-painted Yuzen requires 26 steps to complete. The process begins with a preliminary sketch of the pattern drawn using a pigment called aobana (blue flower), extracted from the petals of the dayflower (Tsuyukusa); this pigment is also produced by chemical synthesis. The aobana pigment does not react with silk thread and is washed away together with the resist paste when rinsed off with water, while chemically synthesized aobana loses its color by reacting with the high-temperature steam in the steaming process.
Following the sketch, the outline of the pattern is drawn using a thin tube filled with a resist paste (bosen-zai), applied in a manner similar to drawing with ink. The resist paste was traditionally made from glutinous rice (mochi-gome) and rice bran (nuka); currently, rubber paste (gomu-nori) is also used. There is also a method where dye is mixed directly into the resist paste to color the fabric.
A step called ji-ire is then performed using a broth of funori (a type of seaweed glue) to blend the resist paste into the fabric, followed by drying. After ji-ire, dyeing of areas outside the paste is performed using techniques called hiki-kiri and bokashi. After drying, a step called mushi (steaming) is performed using high-temperature steam to fix the dye onto the fabric. Following steaming, the resist paste is washed off with water, and after drying, color is hand-painted onto the pattern areas.
Kyo-Yuzen techniques encompass kata-yuzen (stencil), hand-painted yuzen, mechanical discharge printing (nassen), and digital dyeing. Currently, stencil dyeing (kata-zome) and discharge printing (nassen) are the mainstream techniques for Kyo-Yuzen production.
How to Identify Kyo-Yuzen
Kyo-Yuzen is characterized by the precision of its resist-paste outlines, which produce clearly delineated pattern areas, and by the vivid coloration historically associated with the Kamogawa River bleaching process. The use of bokashi (gradation) and hiki-kiri dyeing techniques in areas outside the paste contributes to the nuanced transitions of color visible in finished pieces. Compared with sibling traditions such as Kaga Yuzen, which is known for its realistic floral motifs, or Nagoya Yuzen, Kyo-Yuzen is recognized for the refinement of its hand-painted and stencil-dyed designs on silk.

Production sites have shifted in recent times from central Kyoto to the suburbs. The craft encompasses multiple production methods today, including hand-painted yuzen, kata-yuzen (stencil), mechanical discharge printing, and digital dyeing, with stencil dyeing and discharge printing representing the current mainstream techniques.
