Gold leaf manufacturing is believed to have begun in ancient Egypt around 1200 BC. In China, gold leaf has been manufactured in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province since the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317–420), giving it approximately 1,700 years of history. In Germany, Schwabach in Mittelfranken, Bavaria has been a principal production area for gold leaf for approximately 500 years.
In Japan, at the beginning of the Edo period, gold leaf beating was monopolized by the shogunate. The Kaga Domain, however, succeeded in obtaining a license after continuing illicit manufacturing, establishing the legal foundations for Kanazawa's gold leaf industry. In the late Edo period, kinasago (gold dust) was used in two types: aogane, with a higher silver content, and akagane, with a higher copper content. Techniques & Production Process
The gold leaf manufacturing process is divided between two specialist roles: zumiya, who perform nobékin (rolling) and uwazumi (thinning), and hakuya, who perform hakuuchi (beating). The process proceeds through several distinct steps:
In the kaneawase step, gold and trace amounts of silver and copper are heated to 1,300 degrees Celsius in a crucible to create an alloy. In the nobékin step, the gold alloy is rolled by a rolling machine to 3/100 millimeters and cut into 6-centimeter squares. In the shitaté step, the uwazumi beaten to 3/1,000 millimeters is cut into approximately 20-centimeter squares and sent to the hakuya. In the uchimae step, the foil is beaten and extended to 2–3/10,000 millimeters. In the final hakuutsushi step, the foil is cut to a specified size using a bamboo frame and sandwiched in mitsumata washi paper. Gold leaf is generally sold in units of 100 sheets.
From 1 cubic centimeter of gold, approximately 10 square meters of gold leaf can be produced. The most commonly used grade, called shigou-iro, is stretched to a thickness of approximately 0.0001 millimeters.
Gold leaf is used for furniture such as chests of drawers and folding screens, fixtures such as sliding doors, lacquerware, Buddhist statues, Buddhist altars, and building exteriors and interiors. Craft techniques using gold leaf on lacquerware include chinkin and maki-e; for adorning Buddhist statues, kirikane was developed. In the field of fine arts, kiribaku (finely cut gold leaf), kinasago (powdered gold leaf), and kindei (gold leaf powder dissolved in nikawa glue) are also used. In screen paintings, kiribaku is used to express clouds and similar motifs, while kinasago is used to express mist. The overlap areas of gold leaf in screen paintings are called hakuashi.
A notable by-product of the manufacturing process is abura-tori paper (oil-blotting paper), repurposed from the hakuuchi-gami used to sandwich the gold during beating. Gold and silver are both approved as food additives, and gold leaf of shigou-iro grade or higher is approved for edible use. Gold does not react with strong acids except aqua regia, so ingested gold passes through the body without reacting with digestive fluids such as gastric acid and is excreted unchanged. Copper, however, can leach out and is toxic, so gold leaf used to decorate food must not contain copper.
