“Lacquer glass” describes a combination of materials rather than one universal manufacturing recipe. In the Gold & Silver Leaf Square Glass Plate, the store describes clear glass with lacquer applied to the back, gold and sterling silver leaf decoration, and a protective coating resin. The glass surface is used at the table; the decoration is seen through it.
What can the eye see?
The transparent square form frames an uneven cluster of metallic leaf and scattered flecks. The source photograph shows a concentration of gold and silver toward one side, with smaller marks across the plate. Handcrafted variation is part of the product description, so individual pieces need not have exactly the same distribution. The listing also warns that screen settings may change the apparent colour.
What is the stated construction?
The product page says lacquer is applied to the reverse of the glass, then protected by a dishwasher-safe coating resin. It identifies the metallic materials as gold leaf and sterling silver. It does not publish a step-by-step manufacturing sequence, coating thickness, or test results for particular dishwasher programs. We should not invent those details from the appearance of the finished plate.
The glass face is a practical distinction. The store says cutlery may be used on that surface. The coating on the back remains important: if it is scratched by contact or impact and detergent reaches the layer beneath, the store says to stop machine washing and clean by hand.
How does this relate to urushi craft?
Urushi is a traditional Japanese lacquer used on many types of objects. Japan National Tourism Organization's description of Joboji lacquerware shows one established approach: layers of lacquer on a wooden base. A lacquered glass plate is a different construction. The shared word does not make their care instructions interchangeable.
This plate is offered in 152 mm and 203 mm square sizes. Choose the form that suits the intended serving context, and use the product's own care note as the authority for cleaning.
