Hanamai (花舞, 'flower dance') depicts cherry and plum blossoms in mid-fall, hand-painted in the ancient makie technique on a pure white urushi ground. The white base gives the blossoms an almost porcelain quality, bridging Japanese lacquerware with the Western ceramic tradition.
